Book Review: Yoga the Iyengar Way

book - yoga the iyengar wayI recently picked up my copy of ‘Yoga the Iyengar Way’ and once again was captivated by its precise instructions and excellent photography. This book not only offers some specific guidance into traditional yoga poses, but you get to see the poses demonstrated along with variations. It is visually stunning and a work that any yoga practitioner would be happy to have in their collection.

The book was written by Silva, Mira and Shyam Mehta in 1990 and has a forward by B.K.S. Iyengar, the founder of Iyengar yoga. It includes practically every pose considered fundamental to Hatha Yoga. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not suggesting that it is advisable or safe for everyone to do all of the poses in this book. I take strong exceptions to shoulder stands, the plow, certain headstands and the lotus pose, just to name a few. Yet, as a reference to Hatha yoga this book is on par with Iyengar’s book ‘Light on Yoga’.

So, if you are seeking to have a photo rich book that illustrates most of the traditional Hatha yoga poses, there are few that would compare with this book. It is 196 pages and in a large, 8 X 10 size that really lets you get a good look at the pictures. You can check out other reviews at Amazon.
